The curvy, mountainous roads of West Virginia, as the song says take you "home, to the place I belong". While beautiful and inspiring, these roads can be challenging for drivers. A pothole or two combined with fallen leaves, rainy weather and deer running haphazardly create a combination that is like a video game brought to real life.
With this in mind we thought we would pass along a few safe driving tips:
- Make sure that your car is in good working order including headlights, taillights, brakes and tires inflated properly.
- Make sure your windows are clear when you head down the road. Don't be "that guy" that scrapes a small hole in the frost and tries to make it through town!
- Windshield wipers should be replaced when you no longer get a nice clean swipe. Most parts stores are willing to change them for you!
- Keep your windshield washer tank filled up with a good quality washer fluid. Several brands offer deicing mixtures to help with your morning starts.
This is also the time of year to see deer in unexpected places. The combination of mating season and hunters in pursuit results in deer regularly bolting into the road seemingly from nowhere. And, if one runs out in front of you it is a good bet there are more nearby so be alert.
If you do have an accident, here are some simple tips to help you:
- Be calm and call 9-1-1.
- Make sure you keep yourself safe first. If necessary move yourself to a safe location where other vehicles cannot hit you.
- Use your phone to take pictures of the accident scene from various angles but only from safe vantage points.
- If another car is involved trade names and phone numbers, and auto insurance carrier, at the scene if at all possible.
